On Safari By J.R. Janicek

What more could you want, a wild slammed cruisin' van with more style than you can shake a stick at. Just ask Aaron Thomas, his van shows some serious style. Though Aaron may not be on safari in a wild jungle hunting wild animals, his van is so wild that you could say he is on a sort-of trophy safari when he attends a custom auto show. There aren't too many vans that can hold a candle to Aaron's 1986 GMC Safari van, so it is safe to say he never comes home from a show empty handed.

Knowing that his van would be taking on tough competition Aaron knew some paint and bodywork would be in store. A set of custom ground effects and a wild paint scheme make this beast anything, but tame. A phantom billet grille with Lexus emblem, sliding rag top, euro lighting, and 110-degree lambo doors completes the overall exterior aesthetics.

Inside, it would be an under statement to say that Aaron's van is very custom. In fact it is the interior that we like most about Aaron's van. Sitting in this van is like sitting inside the Playboy Club in Las Vegas! There is plenty of smooth styling everywhere.

Starting with the plastic pieces, everything was sanded smooth and painted to match the exterior. The front seats were swapped out for a set of carbon fiber racing seats and the rear seating was redesigned to take on a living room type of feel with a wrap around couch covered in leopard print material and dotted with leopard print pillows. Anything else that isn't covered in leopard print material was fiberglassed and made into a speaker box and then stuffed with a series of Memphis 12-inch subs. The rear deck was filled with a custom fiberglass enclosure that displays the Memphis Belle amps that power the van's entire audio system along with five Pyle LCD TVs. The rest of the interior also received LCD TVs including one in the dash, one in the rear overhead section, one in each sun visor, four in the wrap around couch, and three in the rear of the custom fiberglass center console. If you count the one under the hood (not pictured) this van has seventeen TVs! A custom CD/DVD head unit brings all of the audio and video system seamlessly together. A Grant GT steering wheel, billet shift column, and custom gauges in the dash, for the air suspension, finish up the interior.

The van is grounded with Firestone air bags, complete with a 9-gallon air tank, and engine driven compressor. 20-inch Storm wheels by Bigg were bolted on the corners, and covered with 225/35/20 rubber.

Aaron's van is one pimped out GMC Safari and that makes it very easy to understand why he gets so much attention at shows. When you are hunting for the king of the jungle, like a best of show trophy, you better bring your "A" game (or should we say wild game?) otherwise a wild beast like Aaron's may take you down!

Shout Out: "Thanks to Jim Hundnall, Terry Roddy, and Jeff Vensel for building the lambo doors. Also I want to thank my sponsors Memphis Audio and Pyle Video." -Aaron Thomas
