Daytona Turkey Run 2007 By Joe Greeves

If you are among the fortunate few who live in the Sunshine State, you know that you never have to garage your ride for the winter, since there are car shows fifty-two weekends a year. Floridians always face the daunting task of deciding which show they'll attend next weekend, since there are always multiple choices. One that is always at the top of everyone's list however, is the Daytona Turkey Run. The largest car show and swap meet in the state is also one of the oldest, now in its 34th year. What's the secret to this event's enduring success? The simple answer is the Turkey Run has something for everyone. Attracting more than 100,000 spectators this year and assembling a huge collection of more than 5100 vehicles in the infield of the Daytona International Speedway, the event covered all four days of the Thanksgiving weekend. And you needed at least that much time just to see the amazing array of custom vehicles. Street rods, customs, antiques, muscle cars, restored originals, trucks, replicas, and more kept spectators walking and smiling throughout the weekend.

But that was only one part of the show. The Turkey Run also has the largest, (four-day) custom car lot in the state, thanks to their annual Car Corral, this year boasting more than 1400 vehicles for sale. With every color of the rainbow and prices to fit virtually every budget, the Car Corral was the perfect place to upgrade the family fun vehicle. But there's more. The Turkey Run is equally famous for its huge collection of 3000 vendors selling everything automotive. From a one dollar package of bolts to a fully dressed crate motor, you can find it at the 'Run. Car rotisseries, steel out buildings, vintage license plates, shop manuals, fiberglass replica bodies, and everything in between meant that whatever you needed for your project vehicle back in the garage, you could find it at the 'Run. And don't worry about straining your back. Golf carts would haul that prized set of Mickey Thompsons back to the parking lot for a nominal fee.

Everyone waits for the Friday and Saturday afternoon door prize giveaways, hoping to see you who will go home with major prizes like crate motors, MIG welders, and more. They are also waiting to hear whose name is called as the winner of the annual giveaway car. Each year the host club, the Daytona Beach Street Rods raffle off a vehicle, using the proceeds to support their many charitable pursuits in the Volusia County area. This year, Randy Floyd from Lake Mary, Florida was the lucky winner. He got to drive home the beautifully restored Z28 Camaro grand prize.

If you'd like to experience almost more fun than you can squeeze into a long weekend and maybe score a few prizes of your own, put the 2008 Turkey Run on your November calendar now. For more information, visit: www.daytonabeachcarshows.com.
