Life At Redline By Joe Greeves

We love extremes. Tastefully done, the personalizing process sets one car apart from the rest and makes us happy to showcase dazzling examples of automotive art. Every now and then however, we find something so far ahead of the rest that we just have to learn more about it. That was the case with our feature Mustang convertible. What makes this one so special? When was the last time you saw someone who could squeeze more than 1,200 horsepower from Ford's 4.6 modular motor? Yeah, us neither!

We interviewed builder Ray McCelland, from Full Throttle Kustomz in Bedford, Ohio and he filled us in on his amazing creation. The company's slogan is "For those who live life at the Redline" and their goal is to always take the cars over the top. Ray told us, "We wanted an all-around car that could win the Fastest Street title as well as Best of Show trophies. We always try to double what everyone else has done." Just to prove they could, Full Throttle Kustomz stayed with a three-valve motor because most guys cresting 1,000 horsepower were switching to the four-valve power plants.

When they began the project, their stock 2007 Mustang GT convertible was triple black, a big departure from its current custom mixed shade of shimmering Tangerine Orange. But the real excitement is under the hood. Boasting one of the most elaborate engines we've seen in some time, the original 4.6L 3V modular motor was stroked to 302. The pros at DSS Racing strengthened the bottom end and Crane designed the custom ground, high-performance cams to match the Full Throttle specifications. The manifold of choice was a Hogan's Racing intake, drilled for a Nitrous Express direct port nitrous system and pressurized by a pair of polished 67 mm Garret Racing turbos supplied by Turbo Horsepower. NASCAR oval 3.5 inch exhaust dumps waste gases. A custom 6-speed D&D Performance transmission uses a McLeod clutch to get the power to the ground. It is a showy package that could be on display in the Guggenheim but it's not just another pretty face. This engine is capable of more than 2,000 HP! Since the best estimates of the block's strength are about 1,700 horsepower, the current de tuned set up generates only 1,243 HP at the rear wheels!

To harness the awesome power, the team added BMR Fabrications subframe connectors and their lightweight, K-frame to beef up the body, along with tubular upper and lower control arms with Wilwood brakes to improved handling, and Tokico strut bars with Ground Force shocks to keep all four wheels securely in touch with the asphalt. A custom Moser 9 inch locking 4.11 rear end with reinforced 35-spline axles is for street use with a locker while the 40-spline unit is for the track. Wheels are three-piece Makavelli rims, 20X9 up front and 20 X 11 in the rear and fitted with Pirelli P-Zero rubber.

But awesome power was only half the equation. Remember, they also wanted to bump up the number of Best of Show trophies in their display case. As much R&D effort went into the appearance of the car as its performance and many one-of-a-kind items were created. The body kit is unique, one of only ten in the country, designed at Dream Car Factory in Streetsboro, Ohio. It consists of a new hood, side scoops, wing, front and rear bumpers, and an unusual rear pan. Lambo door hinges from LSD give the option of normal opening for everyday use and straight up when you want to draw a crowd. The convertible was strengthened by a 10-point roll cage from Rigid Race Cars, tough enough to be certified for an 8.5 second time on the strip. Edelbrock chrome nitrous bottles fitted to the cage are as much a design statement as a power adder. They serve as a warning not to mess with this blindingly quick, Blue Oval thoroughbred. FTK stitched their own suede inserts in the factory seats and installed the Eclipse stereo, DVD, and navigation.

What are the future plans for this radical ride? Ray says "We are working with Ford to find the breaking point on the current block. We think it's limited to about 1,700 horsepower. When it breaks, we plan to switch to a 5.0 motor, stroked to 6L and our goal is to reach 2,500 horsepower. There is nothing quite like riding a wheelie halfway down the strip!" If you are impressed so far, the next most amazing thing you need to know about this SEMA 2007 display vehicle is, that it was completed in just six weeks!
